Plant Programs

"THE GIVING TREE"Grades K-3 (Karen) Grow a new awareness and appreciation for trees. Enjoy an all time favorite story, The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein. Discuss the importance of trees. Be a Tree through creative movement, and conclude with a song/activity.

"RESTORING FORESTS" Grades 5-8 (Glo)How have Flagstaff's forests changed over the past century? How do trees cope with stress? This activity and slide show introduces students to important local efforts in forest restoration.

"THE SECRET LIFE OF A TREE" Grades 1-4 (Mary) Learn the parts of a tree by acting them out. We will build a "human tree" and explain how each part works. (NatureScope)

"GRASSES GALORE " Grades 4-6 (Mar) Discover the many uses of grass that may surprise you. Learn the parts that make up a grass plant, and use this new information to key some species of grass.

"THE REASON FOR A FLOWER" Grades K-2 (Mar) Students will be introduced to the importance of flowers through a story and examining real flowers (when available). The concepts learned are reinforced with a song.

"SEEDS ON THE MOVE" Grades K-5 (Mary and Mar) The story of seed dispersal. How and why are seeds dispersed? Look at different seeds and decide how they disperse and why they look as they do.

"IF TREES COULD TALK..."Grades 3-8 (Kimberly) One of the best ways to learn about how trees grow is to take a close-up look at their annual growth rings.  Students work in groups to identify tree ring patterns, and solve the mystery of their tree's history.

"OUR FOREST FRIENDS"Grades K-3 (Mar and Karen) An introduction to plants, animals and other forest elements that benefit the people of northern Arizona.

"LIFE IN DEAD TREES" Grades K-6 (Mar) What is a snag? What lives in them?  Learn the important role of dead and down trees in the forest.

"TROPICAL RAINFORESTS"Grades 3-12 (Glo) A look into the past, present and future of wet, humid forests of the world. Ecological and economic relationships are explored through slides and open discussion.

"THE LORAX" Grades K-2 (Karen, Mary, and Kimberly) Through role-playing, a puppet, and felt board characters, your students will learn the story of THE LORAX by Dr. Seuss. The story addresses wise resource management.
