Resource Center for
Environmental Education

WHEN The program was started 22 years ago in 1978.

WHAT The Resource Center mission is to provide educational services that
build environmental awareness and an ethic of responsible stewardship of
natural and cultural resources.

HOW We accomplish this goal by providing seven services: 1)in-class
programs on natural and cultural resources, 2) teacher in-service training,
3) curriculum development, 4) field trips, 5) act as a liaison between the
community and the schools, 6) assist with the development of outdoor
classrooms, and 7) a reference and materials library.

AUDIENCE We serve five school districts in Coconino County at grades
K-12: Flagstaff, Fredonia, Parks, Williams and Grand Canyon as well as
St. Mary's Parochial School. In the 1998-1999 school year we had 1138
programs with 29,525 student contacts, 43 field trips, and trained 84 teachers.
We also serve Northern Arizona University, scout groups, private schools,
and adult organizations.

STAFF The director is responsible for daily operations, fund-raising,
curriculum work and teacher training. The instructors give in-class programs
and assist with teacher workshops. We have two work-study students.

1993: National Association of Conservation Districts National
First Place Conservation Education Award, 1993: Crystal Rainbow Award, Channel 3/APS for outstanding conservation education in Arizona.

BOARD The Coconino Natural Resource Conservation District Board of
Directors serves as the Resource Center's Board.

FINANCIAL Our main funding source is "in lieu of tax" monies paid to
the

SUPPORTCounty Superintendent's office.We also receive state money and
a per student assessment from each school district, based on enrollment
figures. We receive grants, donations, and considerable in-kind support.
Direct expenditures for 1998-1999 totaled $63,019.
