Earth Science Programs

"MAD ABOUT MAPS" Grades 1-8 (Mary) An introduction to basic map reading skills and a survey of a variety of map types.

"FLAGSTAFF 'S FLOWS, FAULTS, AND FLOOD PLAINS"Grades 2-8 (Mary) Discover the history and geology of downtown Flagstaff with a focus on historic buildings made of local stone. (Required pre-visit program for the downtown Flagstaff geology field trip.)

"ARIZONA'S HIDDEN TREASURE" Grades 4-8 (Mary) 1 hour, Students follow the copper mining process from exploration through processing, and on to the thousands of ways we use copper everyday. Economic and environmental challenges are discussed.

"EXPLORING CAVES" Grades 2-8 (Mary) 1 hour, During this discovery learning activity students investigate cave ecosystems, formation, fauna, exploration and conservation.

"SIFTING SANDS" Grades 1-6 (Mary and Willow) Look at sand from a scientist's point of view. Primary level focuses on observation and comparison of sand characteristics. Older students investigate grain size, sorting, and degree of rounding.

"THE ERUPTING EARTH" Grades 3-8 (Mary) Take a look at different types of volcanoes, with an emphasis on volcanoes in northern Arizona. Hands-on activity helps students explore how the viscosity of magma relates to volcano types.

"RIFTS, RAFTS AND BLASTS FROM THE PAST" Grades 4-8 (Mary) Trace the development of the plate tectonics theory from the middle ages to the present. Students are introduced to the three types of plate boundaries and the idea of drifting continents through use of a world map and puzzle. 60 min.

"SLIP, SLIDE, BEND AND DIVIDE" Grades 4-8 (Mary) Students explore models of several types of faults and folds. Slide show provides a real world connection to these amazing geologic features. 60 min.

"LANDFORMS UNLIMITED" Grades K-8 (Mary) Students investigate 8 different raised relief models of landforms. Primary program focuses on identification and variety of landforms. Intermediate students associate surface features with crustal movement.

"ROCK TALK" Grades K-12 (Mary) An introduction to igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, including examples from northern Arizona. This program includes a hands-on collection of rocks.

"THE MYSTERY OF CRYSTALS" Grades 4-8 (Mary) Explore crystal forms. Students examine a collection of crystals searching for geometric and angular patterns.

"INTRODUCING THE GRAND CANYON" Grades K-2 (Mary) A "hands-on" learning activity for young children which introduces the concepts of rock layers, canyon formation, and fossil formation.

"GRAND CANYON GEOLOGY" Grades 3-8 (Mary) Explore the layers of the Grand Canyon, how the Canyon was formed, and why it is such a unique treasure. Includes a slide show which gives a fascinating glimpse of the world's greatest classroom from rim to river.

"MILLENNIUM MARCH" Grades 3-8 (Mary) Take a walk through time where each step represents 10 million years! We stop and discuss the life and environments present at each geologic period using rock samples, photos and objects.
