Water Quality

STATUS: Section 208 ofthe 1977 Amendments to the Federal Water Pollution
Control Act (P.S. 95-500) requires area-wide water quality management plans
which will include the identification of agriculturally and silviculturally
related non-point sources of pollution and the development of procedures
and methods to control such sources.

POLICY: Whereas it is the intent ofthe 208 Plan to rely on existing laws and
agencies to deal with any water quality problems, and whereas implementation
of the 208 Plan must rest with a "designated agency", the Coconino NRCD
has accepted this designation as part of its responsibility for wise resource use.
We believe any rancher or farmer that might become involved in installation
of conservation practices to improve identified water quality problems should
receive a high rate of cost-sharing since these projects have
community-wide benefits.

IMPLEMENTATION: In the daily conservation decisions made by the District,
we will seek to identify and prevent any water degradation problems that might
arise. Should a problem become apparent, however; the District will assist its
cooperators in the development of effective solutions. The District will seek to
be responsible for administering funds at the local level for Rural Clean Water
Program projects.
