Recreational Development
on Public and Other Lands

STATUS: Excluding National Park Service lands, little development of
recreational opportunities has occurred in the District in relationship to the
potential on these lands and in relationship to demand for such development.
With increasing travel costs, localized recreational demand is expected to grow.

POLICY: We will support and encourage any such development where demand
has been demonstrated for the particular proposal and where plans for it are
within the capabilities and limitations of the resource. Proposals should also be
consistent with coherent landuse patterns.

IMPLEMENTATION: Specifically, the Coconino NRCD has supported and will
continue to support the improvement of the Arizona Snowbowl Ski Area, and the
City of Flagstaff's and Forest Service's bike path system. With the growth of our
cities, we encourage our communities to provide for local parks and recreational
areas as well as open areas within city limits. The Coconino NRCD is directly
involved in the planning and development of the 400 acre Mt. Elden
Environmental Study Area and the Ft. Tuthill Multiple Use Area.
We are anxious to assist in other projects.
