Land Use

STATUS: The predominant land uses in the Coconino NRCD are grazing on
the grasslands, and those uses associated with the forest lands and areas of
urbanization. With the population growth in our District and the state, there
are many development pressures on the land and its resources.

POLICY: Resource development, conservation, and protection are all necessary.
Agencies with land use responsibilities should examine the resource base of
any proposed development or use. We have and will continue to provide support
to agencies and planners so that their decisions may reflect resource limitations
and potentials.

IMPLEMENTATION: We plan, and hereby request, to be involved with and
have input on planning and decision making concerning land use with the
following: 1) Cities of Flagstaff and Williams, 2) Coconino County, 3) State of
Arizona, and 4) Coconino and Kaibab National Forests. Our comments will
relate to resource capabilities and will be economically realistic. We have
Memorandums of Understanding with some agencies involved in land use
decision making. Updating these agreements is a priority. We will request
Memorandums of Understanding with agencies with whom
we do not have them.
