Environmental Education for Adults

STATUS: Private citizens, industry, decision makers, and land users are not
always fully aware of the environment as having a direct relationship to their
everyday lives. Both inadequate and inaccurate perceptions of the environment
and associated problems arise from a lack of knowledge or experience. As more
is understood about the symbiotic nature of our world and its finite resources,
we are increasingly involved in making critical conservation decisions that must
be environmentally, socially and economically realistic.

POLICY: The District endeavors to foster clear awareness of the economic, social
and ecological interdependence of urban and rural areas. The District believes
that an ethic of responsible action must be developed. This ethic is developed
through the acquisition of knowledge, skills, commitment, attitudes, and values
that are to reflect a concern for our natural and cultural resources. The
development of this ethic is necessary for individuals to become effective
decision makers when dealing with environmental and conservation issues.

IMPLEMENTATION: The Coconino NRCD, through the Willow Bend Environmental
Education Center, has formulated an adult education program.

Currently, the program includes teacher in-service training, speeches to local
organizations, and a semiannual newsletter. Future plans for expansion include
newspaper articles on our resources and a resource information program. In
addition, the District will continue to sponsor tours, seminars, fact sheets and
other educational activities to make cooperators aware of new technologies
and developments.
