History
of Coconino NRCD
In 1972, the title of the state's conservation
districts was changed from Soil
Conservation District (SCD) to Natural Resource
Conservation District
(NRCD). The Coconino SCD then became the Coconino
NRCD. The original
Coconino SCD came into being in December of 1965
with the combination of
two other SCDs. These were the San Francisco
Peaks SCD and the Sitgreaves
Mountain SCD. The San Francisco Peaks SCD dated
back to February 27, 1942 and the Sitgreaves Mountain SCD to June 13, 1946.
As first established, the conservation districts
embraced only farm lands, but
in 1954 the state legislature amended the law
to allow non-farm lands to be
included in the districts. Today, besides agricultural
lands, the Coconino NRCD includes national park lands administered by the
Department ofInterior, Indian
reservation lands, lands administered by the
Department of Defense, and national forest lands.
