Description of District

The Coconino NRCD includes roughly half of Coconino County. There are
5,351,106 acres or about 8,360 square miles within the boundaries of the Coconino NRCD. Range is the leading land use in the District; non-federal rangelands make up about 2.6 million acres. The District deals directly with cooperators on private and state leased lands. Agreements with the Forest Service allow coordinated planning efforts (involving the NRCD,NRCS, Forest Service, and cooperator) on national forest lands. The District also includes under cooperative agreement lands of the Wupatki National Monument and the Havasupai Indian Reservation.

Land elevations range from 2,400 feet at the floor of the Grand Canyon to 12,620 feet at Humphrey Peak north of Flagstaff; the highest point in the state.

From northwest to southeast, the District spans the Colorado Plateau from the
Grand Canyon to the Mogollon Rim, with the San Francisco Volcanic Field in
between. This area is designated the "plateau" section of Arizona for topographic and climatic purposes. The geological processes of sedimentation uplift, erosion and volcanism are responsible for most of the land features in the District.
